Why I LOVE Using Olympic Weightlifting During Return to Exercise After Concussion!

Olympic Weightlifting Snatch After Concussion

Olympic weightlifting...as part of your return-to-exercise program after concussion?!

Is this where we start? No. Is this what we strive to build up to? Hell yes!

Why is olympic weightlifting a valuable tool for folks recovering from concussion?
❤️ They are complex, multi-joint, full-body, dynamic movements
❤️ They significantly improve proprioception & balance
❤️ They involve a reasonable, but not overwhelming, amount of visual & vestibular stimulation
❤️ They improve spatial orientation: i.e. learning to move your body around an object (which is great training for life!)
❤️ Learning a new skill is great for the brain

For my treatment philosophy, this fits in the mid- or late- phase (which I sometimes call the “functional” or “putting-it-all-together” phase) of concussion rehabilitation. It truly can be for everyone if you have an expert who knows how to scale things appropriately for you and your unique concussion recovery.
