Moving On From The Term “Post-Concussion Syndrome”

The medical community is transitioning our verbiage from Post-Concussion Syndrome to Persisting Symptoms after Concussion (PSaC)! This represents a positive shift in how we frame and think about concussions and concussion rehabilitation.

Persisting (not persistent!): Symptoms are persisting for longer than we’d like, but we can work to improve them or solve them with active rehabilitation and therapy techniques.
Symptoms after Concussion: The overall point is that we had a concussion, we still have symptoms, and we should thoroughly evaluate the root cause of those symptoms and work on actively rehabbing those root causes. Not all symptoms after concussion are from the concussion itself, especially when we’re months or years after the injury. Common symptoms after concussion are common symptoms of life: headache, eye strain, brain fog, fatigue, etc. We tie in the whole human as they navigate their recovery.

How we view our health matters. How we talk about our health matters.

You’re so much more than a syndrome or a diagnosis. You may be dealing with persisting symptoms after a concussion and these symptoms can be evaluated, treated, and ultimately overcome. It leaves the door open for growth and opportunity.
