Breathing Practices to Downregulate Your Brain After Concussion

Breathe with me! Here are three beginner versions:

1) Line breathing: 3 seconds inhale, 3 seconds exhale.

2) Triangle breathing: 3 seconds inhale, 3 seconds hold, 3 seconds exhale.

3) Box breathing: 3 seconds inhale, 3 seconds hold, 3 seconds exhale, 3 seconds hold.

Concussion physical therapy is often times about dialing in the basics - and breathing is the quickest and easiest access point to balancing out your systems and helping your brain recover from a concussion. Think of it as a way to tell your brain to slow down, be patient, give yourself grace. You’re also telling your brain that, despite these persisting symptoms, you are safe. This is so valuable as you recover from a concussion.

Feeling your symptoms increase? Feeling stressed? Overwhelmed? Want to prime your system for exercise? Want to signal to your body that it’s time to shift towards sleep mode at the end of the day? Breathing will get you there!

Which breathing practice resonates with you at this moment? Practice it for 3 minutes RIGHT NOW!
